THE REFINEMENT OF CHARACTER

Marc Edmund Jones PH. D.

The effective mobilization by man of his personal characteristics, or what becomes the functional manipulation of his potentialities, is a matter of utilizing the various resources in character and capacity, or of holding them in check. He can sing, or he can drop off into philosophical reflection. He can stir himself in a high physical sensitiveness to danger, or relax in a complete melting of the self through some esthetic enjoyment. He cultivates or strengthens the potentials of function whenever he has recourse to them, just as he contributes to their disintegration and ineffectiveness by his failure to put them to work. His choices in the one way or the other, taken all together, determine the refinement of his characteristics, whether for the better or the worse.

Astrology reveals the pattern by which this refining process may have its most gratifying results. Exactly as any individual must know what clothes to wear for this or that occasion, what words or attitudes to use in social intercourse of a given sort, so must he have a better basis than mere chance, or primitive instinct, in calling upon one as against another characteristic facet of selfhood. The ten planets, by their place in the signs of his horoscope, show the particular ways in which his personality can operate in its exercise of its own nature, thus offering effective guidance for the very best cultivation of character, and for a genuine capitalization upon its worth.

THE SUN IN THE ECLIPTIC

Let not the suit look down and sun, Inglorious here he lies.

Benjamin Franklin, Poor Richard

This means he is essentially fearless, and that he likes to move quickly and positively, taking the full consequences of whatever he does. He does not care much for abstract considerations, and gives little thought to other people.

THE SUN IN TAURUS identifies an individual in whom the fixed and earth characteristics have their sharpest convergence. Life for him must be purposeful, and he must be easily influenced. He can be patient, steadfast and proud, or else touchy, possessive and a martyr.

THE SUN IN GEMINI identifies an individual in whom the common and air characteristics had their sharpest convergence. Life for him must be personal, and he must be readily stimulated. He is intimate, inquisitive, enthusiastic and restless.

He can be charming and exhilarating, or inconstant and ruthless.

THE SUN IN SCORPIO identifies an individual in whom the fixed and water characteristics have their sharpest convergence. Life for him must be purposeful, and he must be self-consummating. He is a realist in minor things, a do-or-die idealist otherwise.

This means he is interested in himself and his own, but capable of broad emotional entanglements. He is mystically inclined, ever seeking poetic and hidden implications. He is universal in taste but intimate in manner.

He is prodigal, but careful.

The native is emotionally naive, continually excusing or overlooking personal deficiencies, and struggling against any subjection of living values to cold reason. We progress, and we prog from pole to pole.

The native asserts himself in the petty details of life by making many demands while also proffering unlimited services or favors.

MARS IN LIBRA reveals a characteristic inclination to act with an enthusiastic letting-go of every available energy, and a constant if unwitting extension of the scope in experience through an insatiable experimentation in all possible relationships. The native asserts himself in the petty details of life by his willingness to face any situation, and to quarrel with all those who do not welcome his co-operation.

MARS IN SCORPIO reveals a characteristic inclination to act with a naive confidence in every personal idea or notion, thus creating an exceptional efficiency in self- mobilization and leading to a long-headed preparation for contingencies. The native asserts himself in the petty details of life by consistently disregarding the immediate situation as it stands, and doing what he wants to do at his own convenience.

MARS IN SAGITTARIUS reveals a characteristic inclination to act with simple faith in the good fellowship and fairness of all men, playing no favorites but making no specific connections and so accepting no particular obligation to definite people or occasions. URANUS IN THE ECLIPTIC

That so few now dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of the time.

John Stuart Mill, On Liberty

Uranus in Aries encourages a characteristic emphasis of individuality through the native's gift for persistent self-assertion, or for seeking experience in which he can respond with the direct and simple naturalness of his own being. He is able to re-grasp or master his destiny at any time by reverting to eccentricity, or permitting some unconditioned impulse to establish a new focus in reality.*

*The three planets of social significance move so slowly that their indications apply of necessity to very large blocks of people, i.e., those who are born, raised and carried through experience together in more or less common patterns of general orientation. To have cases of Uranus in all twelve signs, the spread of nearly a century in births is necessary. The years needed for Neptune are double. It is practically impossible, in the instance of Pluto, to find living examples for more than four of the ecliptical mansions. This means that the characteristics now to be listed, particularly for Neptune and Pluto, will apply to whole generations of people. This fact must be kept in mind with all three newer planets, and it has a special importance in Neptune's case because that body seems to give a particular distribution of subdivisions in the theoretical great ages of man, that is, the sign-intervals in the precession of the equinoxes.

URANUS IN TAURUS encourages a characteristic emphasis of individuality through the native's gift for integrating all possible social acts and judgments, growing in personality through this depth of his interest in organized progress. He is able to re-grasp or master his destiny at any time by re-ordering the pertinent considerations of his own affairs, and adopting a more promising frame of reference for them.

URANUS IN GEMINI encourages a characteristic emphasis of individuality through the native's gift for encouraging others to assert themselves in experience, and for developing new ways to do things. He is able to re-grasp or master his destiny at any time by dropping threadbare interests and turning his attention afresh to the life about him, cultivating new contacts where he can help and be helped.

URANUS IN CANCER encourages a characteristic emphasis of individuality through the native's gift for sustaining a definite personal uniqueness, either uninfluenced by events around him or else bringing everything to pivot upon himself. He is able to re-grasp or master his destiny at any time by giving his exceptional self-interest a social significance, as in becoming a prophet of some sort.

URANUS IN LEO encourages a characteristic emphasis of individuality through the native's gift for dramatizing his own potentialities, thus giving his special assets an added social value. He is able to re-grasp or master his destiny at any time by building upon some unusual development or situation in everyday experience, or by reshaping his own inner realization and developing a new personal intensity.

URANUS IN VIRGO encourages a characteristic emphasis of individuality through the native's gift for enhancing his own original usefulness in the commonplace functions he performs, and for bringing people into exceptionally practical relationship with each other. He is able to re-grasp or master his destiny at any time by encouraging, organizing and utilizing various untried potentialities of the given milieu.

URANUS IN LIBRA encourages a characteristic emphasis of individuality through the native's gift for personal distinctiveness, or for a deliberate eccentricity which he employs to bring out the immediate potentials of a situation. NEPTUNE IN THE ECLIPTIC

I think there is a fatality in it — I seldom go to the place I set out for.

Sterne, A Sentimental Journey

Neptune in Aries requires a characteristic conformity by the native to his astrological generation with its over-all culture of personality per se. He is able to achieve his own desires fully when he demonstrates the genius of this individualistic type. A contribution of this group in America was the establishment of Spiritualism, Christian Science and Theosophy as a recrudescence of creative personality.*

*It is impossible to specify — in terms of a definite number of years with sharply defined boundaries — the domination of social events by individuals whose horoscopes place Neptune in the given sign. A very broad approximation is gained, in the delineations here given, by taking these periods as beginning, in each case, some twenty-five years after the planet's ingress. This does not mean that the pioneers or leaders of the astrological generation were born with Neptune in the particular zodiacal mansion, but rather that the great impetus which they articulated has stemmed from the mass of those who were so defined. Developments in the United States are used for illustration, but the phenomenon is world-wide, and can be traced out in similar fashion everywhere. The thirteen or fourteen-year transitions are subtle, although important and not difficult to recognize. They are suggested here with only the briefest of pen strokes.
